Charley Morgan’s PANACEA

Designed and built for drugstore magnate Jack Eckerd of Clearwater, Florida.

Lovely PANACEA breasts a Gulf Stream sea on her way to win the race to Lucaya in the Bahamas.

In Charley’s own words, the story behind the PANACEA. Enjoy!

PANACEA was custom designed by Charley Morgan and built by Morgan Yacht for drugstore magnate Jack Eckerd Clearwater, Florida. Originally, Jack had not intended to race which was a bit disappointing to all of us at Morgan Yacht. However that all changed when my partner Bruce Bidwell and I recommended the great local sailor, and my old shipmate, Harold Balcom for the post of Captain.

It didn’t take Harold long to conscript the “best of the best” for crew and afterguard for our new pride and joy and plan a racing campaign. And race they did with Eckerd in the post of navigator they proceeded to knock off a series of wins that made all of us sit up and take notice.

Although a compfy, center-cockpit, CCA, keel center-boarder, PANACEA is a yacht with an enviable ocean racing record, …
thus placing her in the Morgan Hall of Fame. (we are now verifying her major wins for posting soon). (ed)

In another life, – after her racing career was over-, new owners renamed her – GODSPEED, and circumnavigated the world with their children whom they educated along the way.

GODSPEED now lies at the island of CRETE in the Mediterranean Sea.

GODSPEEDS owners, an engaging couple, who have owned loved and cared for for around 25 years now, are promising us a story for posting in the Morgan Chantyman.

Their extended cruising achievements ensure that they will be recognized in the
Morgan Cruising Hall of Fame.
